University-Specific Exceptions
Who Breaks the Standard Combo Rules
UoW, Notre Dame, USYD, and UoM all break the standard combo model. Understanding these exceptions can open doors that most applicants don't know exist.

Not Every Medical School Uses the Standard Combo
Most Australian medical schools rank applicants using a combo score (GPA + GAMSAT), with a benchmark around 1.68. But several universities break this model entirely - and understanding these exceptions can open doors that many applicants don't even know exist.
University of Wollongong - The CASPer Wildcard
For postgraduate medicine, CASPer is used only by UoW, UNDS and UNDF. The chances calculator handles those pathways alongside the non-CASPer GPA/GAMSAT schools.
UOW uses GPA and GAMSAT as eligibility hurdles. For 2027 entry, its published interview ranking uses 50% CASPer score and 50% admissions bonuses. Meeting the hurdles does not guarantee an interview. Official GEMSAS school entry, checked 24 September 2026.
In applicant outcomes Dan observed in 2024, 2025 and 2026, three bonuses plus Q4 CASPer were not always enough for a UOW interview. UOW does not publish this as a benchmark. It is not guaranteed, should not be relied upon, and can change at any time.
Outcomes suggest that position within Q4 may matter, but Acuity reports only a quartile. Applicants cannot see or act directly on their position within Q4. Check which published bonuses you qualify for and prepare for CASPer; this observation cannot predict an individual result.
If UoW is a target school, your CASPer preparation should be your top priority. Use our free CASPer practice tool to build genuine skill across all 9 tenets.
Notre Dame (Sydney & Fremantle)
In observed applicant outcomes from 2024-2025, combos as low as 1.56 have received Notre Dame interview invitations. This is observed applicant data, not published university policy: Notre Dame does not publish this figure. It is not guaranteed, should not be relied upon, and can change at any time.
Notre Dame is one of the only postgraduate medicine pathways where CASPer is formally part of selection. CASPer sits alongside GPA, unweighted GAMSAT and bonus points; the other postgraduate universities outside UoW/UNDS/UNDF do not factor CASPer at all. Strong interpersonal performance can compensate for a lower academic profile, making Notre Dame an important option for students whose numbers are borderline.
University of Sydney - GAMSAT Only
For standard domestic graduate entry in 2027, Sydney requires at least 50 in each GAMSAT section and ranks on section scores, not the overall or average score. That published rule is separate from the inferred weighting below. Official Sydney admissions information, checked 24 September 2026.
From applicant outcomes observed in 2024, 2025 and 2026, the inferred weighting is 1xS1 + 1xS2 + 0.1xS3, with an observed offer guide around 152.5. Sydney does not publish this weighting or threshold. They are not guaranteed, should not be relied upon, and can change at any time without notice.
For illustration, section scores of 75/82/63 produce 163.3 under that inferred formula. This is an arithmetic example, not a published Sydney score or an assurance of an offer.
The inferred weighting and observed threshold can change without notice. Check current Sydney admissions rules; the university does not confirm this formula.
University of Melbourne
UoM uses the standard GPA + GAMSAT combo for initial ranking, but then applies an internal GPA re-distribution that affects a small number of applicants. The 1.68 benchmark generally applies - the re-ranking only meaningfully impacts the bottom 1-3% of invitees.
University of Queensland
UQ splits interview shortlisting between assessed GPA and unweighted GAMSAT. It does not factor CASPer into postgraduate selection. UQ interviews are run as MMIs, with regional pathway and rural-access rules adding extra complexity for some applicants.
Standard Combo Universities
Schools such as ANU, Deakin, Griffith, UWA and Macquarie sit closer to the usual GPA/GAMSAT ranking model, although each has its own details around bonuses, GAMSAT weighting, rural entry and interview format. Published cutoffs shift annually with cohort competitiveness - always check each university's latest figures.
These exceptions matter, but they sit on top of the standard pathway. If you're still mapping out the basics - pathways, GAMSAT, GPA, interviews - start with the complete guide to getting into medicine in Australia.
