How JCU selects for medicine

JCU offers an undergraduate-entry medicine program in Townsville and is notable for not requiring the UCAT or GAMSAT. Selection typically uses your academic record, a written application or questionnaire, and an interview, with a strong mission in rural, remote, tropical and Indigenous health.

  • Resilience and adaptability - you can handle the realities of working far from a big city.
  • Cultural awareness and respect, especially for Indigenous and tropical health.
  • Warm, clear communication and genuine empathy.

Common mistakes we see

  • Claiming rural interest with nothing specific or lived behind it.
  • A metro-default outlook when the whole program is rural and remote.
  • Generic answers that show no real connection to people or place.
  • Sounding rehearsed rather than genuine.

About the JCU Medicine program

JCU's undergraduate-entry program runs around six years, based in Townsville with extensive placements across rural, remote and regional northern Australia. Teaching is integrated with an early and sustained focus on rural, tropical and Indigenous health. Confirm the current structure with JCU.

Fees (approximate)

Most domestic students study in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and pay the government-set annual student contribution for medicine - roughly AUD 10,000-11,000 per year as a 2025 guide, subject to change. Full-fee domestic and international places cost substantially more. For orientation only; confirm current fees with JCU.
