A practice exercise
Choose an experience that changed how you think about responsibility or access to help. Explain what you learned without claiming knowledge of a community you do not have. Ask a partner to challenge one assumption in your answer.
Keep in mind: Do not invent rural or clinical experience. Follow medicine-specific instructions rather than copying written-application requirements from another JCU course.

- Cultural awareness and respect, especially for Indigenous and tropical health.
- Warm, clear communication and genuine empathy.
Common mistakes we see
- Claiming rural interest with nothing specific or lived behind it.
- A metro-default outlook when the whole program is rural and remote.
- Generic answers that show no real connection to people or place.
- Sounding rehearsed rather than genuine.
About the JCU Medicine program
JCU's undergraduate-entry program runs around six years, based in Townsville with extensive placements across rural, remote and regional northern Australia. Teaching is integrated with an early and sustained focus on rural, tropical and Indigenous health. Confirm the current structure with JCU.
