How Monash selects for medicine

Monash offers a direct undergraduate-entry medicine pathway based in Melbourne. Selection combines secondary academic results (ATAR), the UCAT, and a multiple mini interview (MMI) for shortlisted applicants. This pathway does not use the GAMSAT.

These are general coaching principles, not a claim about Monash’s marking rubric. In practice, work on:

  • Genuine reflection - real experiences that changed how you think, not a tidy list of achievements.
  • Maturity beyond your years - handling an awkward or emotional scenario with steadiness.
  • Balanced reasoning - naming the tension and weighing more than one side before acting.
  • Warmth that comes through in how you speak, especially in role-play stations.

Common mistakes we see

  • Sounding rehearsed - phrasing that does not survive a follow-up.
  • Surface-level reflection ("it taught me teamwork") with no specific detail.
  • Jumping to the "right" answer without acknowledging the people affected.
  • Treating role-play stations like a speech instead of a conversation.

About the Monash Medicine program

Monash's direct undergraduate pathway leads to the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine over roughly five years, based mainly at the Clayton campus in Melbourne with clinical placements across its hospital network. Teaching is built around integrated, case- and problem-based learning with early clinical exposure. Confirm the current structure with Monash.

Fees (approximate)

Most domestic students study in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and pay the government-set annual student contribution for medicine - roughly AUD 10,000-11,000 per year as a 2025 guide, subject to change each year. Full-fee domestic and international places cost substantially more. These figures are for orientation only; always confirm current fees with Monash.

Research opportunities

Research is embedded through the Bachelor of Medical Science component, with scholarly and research-intensive options and the chance to pursue honours or further research projects alongside the medical curriculum.
