How the JMP selects for medicine

The Joint Medical Program, run by the University of Newcastle and the University of New England, is an undergraduate-entry pathway. Selection combines secondary academic results (ATAR), the UCAT, and an interview for shortlisted applicants, with a strong regional and rural emphasis.

  • Authentic regional and rural interest - specific reasons rather than a rehearsed line.
  • Empathy and clear communication in role-play and conversation.
  • Sound ethical reasoning - naming the tension and weighing more than one side.
  • Honest self-awareness.

Common mistakes we see

  • A metro-only outlook when the program is regionally focused.
  • Generic answers with no real connection to people or place.
  • Talking over the other person in a role-play.
  • Sounding rehearsed rather than genuine.

About the Joint Medical Program

The JMP runs around five years, delivered jointly by the University of Newcastle and the University of New England across Newcastle, Armidale and regional NSW, with strong community-based clinical placements. Confirm the current structure with the universities.

Fees (approximate)

Most domestic students study in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and pay the government-set annual student contribution for medicine - roughly AUD 10,000-11,000 per year as a 2025 guide, subject to change. Full-fee domestic and international places cost substantially more. For orientation only; confirm current fees with the universities.
