How UQ selects for medicine

UQ offers a graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine based in Brisbane. Selection combines your GPA, the GAMSAT, and a multiple mini interview (MMI) for shortlisted applicants, with applications managed through GEMSAS.

Dan’s general interview preparation advice

As a graduate program, UQ's MMI expects maturity and self-awareness. In our coaching experience the strongest answers show:

  • Structured ethical reasoning - you name the tension, weigh the key duties, and land on a defensible, humane action.
  • Professional judgement - sensible handling of hierarchy, safety and confidentiality.
  • Clear, human communication - explaining your thinking the way a good doctor would to a patient.
  • Genuine, considered motivation for medicine as a graduate.

Common mistakes we see

  • Dropping clinical or scientific knowledge to look impressive - the MMI is not testing that.
  • Generic answers that could fit any station and any applicant.
  • Reaching a conclusion without acknowledging the people affected.
  • Defending a first answer instead of thinking aloud when challenged.

About the UQ MD program

UQ's Doctor of Medicine is a graduate-entry program of around four years, based in Brisbane with extensive clinical placements across Queensland (including rural and regional sites, and a US clinical pathway option in some years). Teaching uses case-based learning with early and ongoing clinical exposure. Confirm the current structure with UQ.

Fees (approximate)

Most domestic students study in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and pay the government-set annual student contribution for medicine - roughly AUD 10,000-11,000 per year as a 2025 guide, subject to change. Full-fee domestic and international places cost substantially more. For orientation only; confirm current fees with UQ.

UQ offers research pathways within and alongside the MD, including research projects, honours-style options and links to its large medical research institutes. Confirm current options with UQ.
